Threaded Rods have multiple applications and uses, but it’s main use is for body mounting and the manufacturing of u-bolts. These rods are produced to SAE-J429. This material is a cold drawn, stress relieved, micro-alloyed, 1541 modified steel. These rods have “cold rolled threads” and cannot be threaded beyond the threads they are manufactured with.
Grade by diameter of rod;
3/8 to 9/16 diameter are Grade 5
5/8 to 1 1/4 diameter are Grade 8
Approximate thread lengths are predetermined and are listed below;
(Total rod length = Thread length on each end)
8″ to 20″ = 2″-3″
22″ to 30″ = 4″
32″ to 48″ = 6″
The only thread pitch we sell are SAE (fine) and are manufactured by rolling a rod between dies creating threads for maximum strength. As stated above, this makes the non-threaded part of the stock slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the threads and are not thread-able beyond the way they are.
